We left early in the morning with our sack lunches to head for Wales on a Church History trip.

Our first stop in Wales was the Big Pit coal mine. We had a great Welsh tour guide. We were 300 ft below ground. The lift was rather tiny and scary. It reminded my of the movie October Sky when he goes down into the coal mines for the first time. The guide shoed us how they moved the coal, different signals they send to each other through electrical wires. These wires were not protected at first and can easily start a fire. He also showed us different ways to test the air for methane gas.

The Guide was awesome. He often talked about how he likes to drink a lot. He was shocked to find out that no one in our group drinks. He also found out that we don’t drink coffee. By that time he thought were crazy and told us he would die without his coffee every morning. He also got really excited and told us that Donny Osmond’s family is from Wales. The Welsh people are known for their ability to sing. He dared us to sing a song together. I think he thought we would be really bad and he could make fun of us. We decided to sing “How Great Thou Art”. (The guy that founded the Tabernacle Choir is from Welsh). Then we asked him to teach us a Welsh coal mining song. It was a neat missionary experience.
He also showed us where the horses would have lived. The horses go blind in the mines because of the dust and the lighting. They are allowed above ground for two weeks.
On the way back up the shaft we continued to sing but no one at the top could understand.

After the coal mine we went to St. Fagan’s National History Museum. We drove from the coal mine to the museum just outside of Cardiff the main city in Wales

Its called the natural museum not because its has natural nature things but because it tells about the natural human life. The museum is all out doors you walk around between all of these different houses and different types of mills. There was a cock-pit there and we danced around inside while singing “ You are sixteen going on seventeen” and we even were successful at doing the leap in between the benches. It was really exciting.

We also went inside some Celtic huts where we got to pick up some of the armor and weapons. Dasily pretended to kill me with her spear. The picture is really believable

Then we headed off to the Castle and took a lot of fun photos along the way. Rebecca pretended to be a dinosaur on the way there and made this really crazy noise. While we were inside it was a self guided tour with things to read in each room. We decided that we needed to work on our British accents so we each took turns reading the plaques at loud and then asking the person random things about the room with our British accents.

Then we skipped back to the bus. It was really fun to skip. We then went to Cardiff to get to the youth hostel.

Wow. It is like way better than the coal mining book I had to read in English history. Why couldn't we just go see it? I love how you are making a journal and add the silly details. We miss you! This is Deidre.
