We decided that we had way too many people to keep traveling in our large groups so we broke up into smaller groups.
I headed off to Trinity College to see the Book of Kells. This was really cool. The museum before you actually get to see the book is really interesting. It shows you how monks made the illuminations on the Bible’s. I really understand why it took them so long to make these books now. The book was really cool to look at. Rebecca one of the girls I went with reads Latin so she started reading some of the parts of the book to us.
The last part of the exhibit leads you to this massive library just filled with old books. It was really cool to walk around in there.
Then we bought tickets for hop-on-hop off bus tour. We got off to see two churches. The insides of the churches were not that impressive compared to other ones we have seen. Inside one of the churches was a mummified cat chasing a rat. They got stuck in one of the organ pipes inside the organ. I though this was really funny story. St. Patrick’s Cathedral was disappointing there was restoration going on.
Then we got back on the hop-on-hop of bus tour. We drove by the Guinness distilleries we didn’t have time to stop here but we took pictures from the bus. Then we hopped off at the Kilmainham goal (jail) they spell it differently.
Kilmainham goal was really interesting. We had a guided tour through the whole jail. It was actually really depressing. Most of the people responsible for Ireland gaining its independence were executed here. One of guys married his wife ten minutes before his execution. There was a museum at the end of the tour. I didn’t have a lot of time to spend there but I wish we would have had more time.
Back to the bus we went. We learned a lot about Dublin from this part of the tour. The Phoenix is larger than all of the parks in London put together. I have no idea how huge this park must be. Hyde Park is massive a long with many of the parks in London. And a herd of 600 deer still roam around the park. There is also a monument to the Duke of Wellington. Now you might be wondering like I was…Isn’t the Duke of Wellington British?? No he is not. He is Irish and not very proud of his heritage. The monument looks like the Washington Monument but it is shorter. It took a long time to build because the Duke was not proud of his heritage.
We got stuck on the bus for a much longer time than we needed too and I was really frustrated but we finally go to where we needed to be. Then we headed to a restored Georgian house. This was my favorite part of the trip. It was a really neat house. They had a movie prior to the tour of the house that was cheesy but informative. And the people we were on the tour with were really rich and nicely dressed. They were also all very tall. Everyone was over 6ft tall. It was really weird. So every room we went into everyone would form a circle around me so I could see (they all could see over me a phenomena that I do not understand).
After this we got a little lost trying to find the Archeology museum. Once we finally found it we didn’t have time to go inside. It was rather convenient because the girls that we needed to meet up with had just finished going through the museum. Just as we were heading to our bus stop it started raining really hard. We got soaked even with our umbrellas and coats.
We made it to airport just fine but once we got to the airport we had tons of problems. They had huge issues with my name being spelled wrong. But we got that worked out. Then we went through security and they said that my deodorant was a liquid. I have been through three airports and not one of them has caught this. I also had a glass figurine in a box. I think they thought it was liquor. We finally made it to our gate but the plane was delayed and hour and half. A few of us went to try and find drinking fountains. We could not find one. This wasn’t too surprising because you can never find a drinking fountain any where in the UK its really weird. So Rebecca finally asked a guy at a chocolate shop to fill up her water bottle and he said yes. Dasile and I were too scared to ask because we had not bought anything from him. So we debated for about five minutes if we should ask him for water. Apparently he was watching us the whole time so when we walked up to him he didn’t even say anything he just held his hand out for our water bottles while laughing. We felt bad because he was so nice so we bought a little chocolate piece from him. It was really good chocolate. However our airport adventure is not over. They changed the gate we were departing from without telling us. Thank goodness we noticed.
The plane ride and train ride were uneventful. It was really nice to return to the Center. Its weird how it has turned into home.
